The Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards (META), instituted by the Mahindra Group in 2006, recognises and rewards India\u2019s best theatre productions and practitioners across regions and languages. META, which is held every year across multiple venues in Delhi, aims to increase awareness and appreciation of Indian theatre and give a voice to diverse themes. The Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards nominates 10 plays out of hundreds of submissions to be staged over a week. The award<\/a> recognises all aspects of the stage, by presenting awards in 13 categories including playwriting, set, costume and light design, direction and performance. A Lifetime Achievement Award is also presented at the awards night.

Social issues, mythology, religion, gender, caste, class and politics have all been explored by the nominated plays. Among the landmark productions that have been bestowed with multiple METAs are Indian Ensemble\u2019s Gasha<\/em> (2013), The Company Theatre\u2019s Piya Behrupiya<\/em> (2014), Dramanon\u2019s Akshayambara<\/em> (2016), Dur Se Brothers\u2019 Elephant in the Room<\/em> (2017), Black Theatre\u2019s Nona<\/em> (2018) and Black Box Okhla\u2019s For the Record<\/em> (2020). Though the festival did not take place in 2021, the organisers held a series of online talks and masterclasses in its place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the 2022 edition, which marked the return of the festival in an in-person format, four award-winning plays from the 2020 instalment were staged. They were For the Record<\/em> (Hindi and English), O. T. Shajahan and Back Stage’s Bhaskara Pattelarum Thommiyude Jeevithavum<\/em> (Malayalam), Orchid Theatre’s The Old Man<\/em> (Assamese and gibberish) and Thakurpukur Ichheymoto’s Ghoom Nei<\/em> (Bengali). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The upcoming edition of META will be held between 14 and 20 March, 2024 in Delhi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
