Mumbai\u2019s very own LGBTQ+ film festival\u2014KASHISH\u00a0Pride Film Festival\u2014 will be held this year at Liberty Cinema and Alliance Francaise. The mission of the festival, which was founded in 2010, is to catalyse social change and mainstream LGBTQ+ visibility through cinema. A veritable Pride movement, it comprises screenings of features, documentaries, animations and shorts, as well as Q&As and panel discussions with film personalities, workshops, dance and music performances, and an awards ceremony. The categories include those for the best emerging Indian filmmaker, best student short film and the Rainbow Warrior Award and Rainbow Champion Award, which honour an out and proud LGBTQ+ individual and an organisation working for the community respectively. Actors such as Ian McKellen, Nandita Das, Sanjay Suri, Sonam Kapoor and filmmakers such as Shyam Benegal, Sai Paranjpye and Onir have participated in previous editions. Among India\u2019s biggest LGBTQ+ film festivals, the KASHISH\u00a0Pride Film Festival sees an average footfall of 9,500 attendees every year.
The theme of this year’s festival is ‘UNFURL YOUR PRIDE. The idea will be expressed through films, art and poetry that are universal in their appeal. The festival will also have celebrity red-carpet events, engaging panel discussions, exquisite performances by the queer community and allies, workshops, interactive sessions and a film pitching session for your LGBTQ+ filmmakers to make their next short film.
