The Govandi Arts Festival is a celebration of arts and culture in the marginalised neighbourhood of Govandi in Mumbai. It will culminate in a parallel community-led arts festival in Mumbai, with digital projections in Bristol in the UK, in February 2023. The festival is part of the British Council\u2019s \u2018India\/UK Together, a Season of Culture<\/a>\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event aims to \u201cwork with an alternative pedagogy to engage with the issues of the marginalised that centre around expression, joy and celebration, without romanticising their lived realities\u201d. It will showcase the talents of emerging artists from Govandi who are being mentored by professional artists, photographers, filmmakers, musicians and theatre persons. The list of mentors includes actor Niharika Lyra Dutt, filmmaker Pankaj Rishi Kumar, visual artist and illustrator Sanskar Sawant aka Chew\u2019d Perfect, and photographer Tejinder Singh Khamka.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The idea for the festival, say its organisers, came out of the need to spotlight “the creative resistance that thrives in the hearts of people” in Govandi. This creative resistance is best exemplified by artists such as resident and rapper-filmmaker Moin Khan and his song \u201cHaq Se Govandi\u201d, the title of which loosely translates into \u201cGovandi, My Pride\u201d. Asked about what prompted him to write the track, he said, \u201cI wanted to give Govandi another identity which is not linked to crime or garbage.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the events and activities planned are art exhibitions, film screenings, music performances, panel discussions, walks and workshops. It will also include a lantern parade put together in collaboration with <\/span>UK-based artists association Lamplighter Arts team. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is situated about 30 km from the main Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) train station. Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji has two terminals. Terminal 1, or the domestic terminal, was the old airport referred to as Santa Cruz Airport, and some locals still use this name. Terminal 2, or the international terminal, replaced the old terminal 2, formerly known as Sahar Airport. The Santa Cruz Domestic Airport is about 4.5 km from the international airport. There are regular direct flights to Mumbai from most major cities in India and across the world.
