The Chau Jhumur Utsav is being held at Bamnia, Jaldha II, Purulia in West Bengal between 28 and 30 March 2023 to celebrate the traditional and cultural folk art forms of Purulia.
Launched in 2010, the Chau Jhumur Utsav celebrates and showcases two folk traditions of the state—Chau and Jhumur. Chau is a vibrant, colourful and vigorous form of dance drama representing mythological tales that propagate moral and ethical values. The dancers wear colourful and ornate masks that depict characters from the epic. Chau dance was inscribed in the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010. Jhumur dance is a folk art form of the Chhotanagpur plateau covering several districts of West Bengal. The artform celebrates life and togetherness. During the festival, one can explore Purulia’s community-based heritage, interact with the artists, and have an immersive cultural experience.
Over the years, many of India’s leading Chau artists such as Baghambar Singh Mura, Biren Kalindi and Jagannath Chaudhuri have performed at the festival.
