How to reach Shillong
1. By Air: Shillong is served by two nearby airports. The nearest is Umroi Airport (about 30 km away), which operates limited regional flights. For better connectivity, most travelers fly into Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati (around 100 km from Shillong) — well-connected to all major Indian cities. From Guwahati, taxis and shared cabs regularly ply to Shillong, offering a scenic 2.5 to 3-hour drive through the rolling Khasi hills.
2. By Rail: Shillong does not have its own railway station. The Guwahati Railway Station, about 100 km away, is the nearest major railhead connecting the region to Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and other major cities. From Guwahati, travelers can easily hire a taxi, take a bus, or book a shared cab to reach Shillong comfortably.
3. By Road: Shillong is well connected by road to Guwahati and other northeastern towns via National Highway 40 (NH-40). The drive from Guwahati takes around 2.5 to 4 hours and offers breathtaking views of lush hills and waterfalls. Regular private and state-run buses, shared taxis, and rental cabs operate between the two cities, making the journey smooth and affordable.
