The Dokra Mela, launched in 2015, celebrates the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) of traditional Dokra handicrafts of Bengal. Dokra Craft is one of the earliest methods of non-ferrous metal casting known to human civilization. The lost or vanishing wax casting method is popularly known as Dokra. The craft is revered all over the world for its primeval simplicity and enthralling folk motifs. Dokra products involve a tedious process of designing and metal casting.
At the festival, Dokra artists from the area demonstrate the process and showcase their works. Attendees can shop for their products and participate in workshops. They can also visit the folk art museum that houses a collection of rare and antique artifacts.
This festival is part of the initiative, Rural Craft and Cultural Hubs (RCCH) of West Bengal undertaken by the Department of MSME&T (Department of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Textiles), Govt. of West Bengal and UNESCO and supported by the District Administration of Bankura.
The latest edition of the Bikna Dokra Mela will be held between 25 and 27 October at Dariyapur village in Purba Bardhaman.
