The Durrie Festival organised by the Department of Tourism in Rajasthan, showcases the handcrafted works of rug weavers in the village of Salawas, located approximately 20 km from the city of Jodhpur. Held in partnership with UNESCO, the inaugural edition of the festival in 2022 saw attendees learn about the history, processes and practice of durrie weaving. The festival goers could also buy the handwoven wares directly from their makers.
The Prajapat community of Salawas has been practising the craft of weaving durries, which are intricately patterned rugs, since the mid-nineteenth century. Apart from rugs, they also make bags, cushion covers and other home décor items. One of the chief attractions for the festival goers was getting an opportunity to not only interact with the durrie makers, but also to put up at their homestays as guests and explore their durrie collections. Besides, the village also had a designated zone for exhibitions and demonstrations. Cultural performances showcasing folk songs and dances of western Rajasthan were staged during the evenings.
