This two-day festival, in the village of Chopasani in the district of Jodhpur, showcases the Kalbelia folk dance and music form. Kalbelias are a tribe who were primarily occupied as snake charmers and now earn their livelihood as performers.
The Kalbelia folk songs and dance of Rajasthan were included in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) of Humanity in 2010. The Kalbelia Festival, organised by the Department of Tourism, Government of Rajasthan in collaboration with UNESCO, spotlights Kalbelia as well as the folk music of the Langa and Manganiyar communities.
The list of performers at the festival have included Kalbelia artists such as dancer Khatu Sapera and pungi and been player Prem Nath Kalbelia. Attendees have had the opportunity to interact with and learn about the history of the artforms directly from these practitioners.
