Nabanna Folk Art and Craft Fair is a 10-day annual festival held during Basanta Utsav in Shantiniketan, West Bengal. Established in 2006, the fair provides a platform for craftspersons to directly engage with visitors, demonstrate their processes, and sell their work without intermediaries.
Over the years, the festival has grown from featuring a few dozen artisans to hosting around 200 participants in recent editions. It showcases a wide range of traditional and contemporary crafts, including Madhubani and Alpana paintings, Patachitra, Pipli art, pottery, textiles, tribal crafts, silver and copper jewellery, brass and bell metal work, and stone carvings, among others.
The festival opens with Nabanna Earth Weekend, a literary and cultural gathering that brings together writers, researchers, performing artists, and innovators to discuss art, storytelling, social change, and environmental sustainability. In addition to the craft fair, the programme includes cultural performances, workshops for artisans and students, exhibitions, art camps, competitions, a food court, and community-focused initiatives such as health camps.
Organised by the Suresh Amiya Memorial Trust, Nabanna continues to function as a platform that connects artisans, audiences, and ideas within the context of Shantiniketan’s cultural landscape.

1. Light and airy cotton clothes; Kolkata is typically very hot in March. 2. A sturdy water bottle, if the festival has refillable water stations, and if the venue allows bottles to be taken inside. 3. Comfortable footwear such as sneakers (a perfect option if it’s not likely to rain). 4. COVID packs: Hand sanitiser, extra masks and a copy of your vaccination certificate are things you should keep handy.
