    Prithvi Festival
    3 Nov 2024  to  18 Nov 2024

Prithvi Festival is the annual festival organised by Mumbai’s Prithvi Theatre around its anniversary, which is celebrated on November 5. The festival, which was launched in 1983, showcases new, emerging and past theatre performances. Adishakti, Ansh, Complicite, Motley, Naya Theatre, Rage Productions and Theatre Unit are just a few of the theatre groups that have staged productions at the festival, many of which have premiered at the event. Along with plays, the events have included talks and music concerts.

The Prithvi Festival has occasionally travelled to other cities such as New Delhi (1995, 1998, 2000, 2004), Pune (2000), Bengaluru (2004, 2005) and Dubai (2016, 2017). The festival, which did not take place in 2020 and 2021 on account of the pandemic, returned in 2022. It witnessed 10 days of plays, music performances, dance recitals and conversations with actors about their journey and aspirations. The stage talk featured Radhika Apte, Adil Hussain, Shefali Shah, Jim Sarbh, Piyush Mishra, Neena Kulkarni and Ali Fazal among others.

    How To Get There

    How to Reach Mumbai

    1. By Air: Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, formerly known as Sahar International Airport, is the primary international airport serving the Mumbai metropolitan area. It is situated about 30 km from the main Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) train station. Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji has two terminals. Terminal 1, or the domestic terminal, was the old airport referred to as Santa Cruz Airport, and some locals still use this name. Terminal 2, or the international terminal, replaced the old terminal 2, formerly known as Sahar Airport. The Santa Cruz Domestic Airport is about 4.5 km from the international airport. There are regular direct flights to Mumbai from most major cities in India and across the world. Buses and cabs are easily available from the airport to reach desired destinations.

    2. By Rail: Mumbai is very well connected to rest of India by train. The Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus is the most popular station in Mumbai. Trains to Mumbai are available from all major railway stations in India. Some important Mumbai trains of note are the Mumbai Rajdhani, Mumbai Duronto, and Konkan Kanya Express.

    3. By Road: Mumbai is well-connected with national highways and expressways. Visiting by bus is economical for individual tourists. Government-run and private buses operate daily services. Travelling to Mumbai by car is a common choice made by travellers, and hailing a cab or hiring a private car is an efficient way of exploring the city.

    Items & Accessories to Carry

    1. Sandals, flip flops, sneakers (perfect option if it’s not likely to rain) or boots (but make sure they are worn in). You need to keep those feet tappin’. On that note, carry a bandana or a scrunchie to avoid tressy accidents with your fellow festival-goers.

    2. A sturdy water bottle, if the festival has refillable water stations.

    3. COVID packs: Hand sanitiser, extra masks and a copy of your vaccination certificate are things you should keep handy.

    Prithvi Theatre
Prithvi Theatre is a subsidiary of the Shri Prithviraj Kapoor Memorial Trust and Research Foundation. The trust was set up in 1975 in memory of actor Prithviraj Kapoor, to promote and develop professional theatre, in Hindi primarily, by providing and managing a well-equipped venue at very reasonable costs, with all the technical facilities. Its other aims were to subsidise and promote aspiring and deserving stage artists, technicians and researchers; to host and conduct workshops; to provide rehearsal and workshop spaces; to create a theatre resource centre and research library; and to provide medical and educational assistance to theatre workers and their children. Its flagship event is the annual Prithvi Theatre Festival. Special programmes include a yearly memorial concert, designed by tabla player Zakir Hussain, and the Summertime at Prithvi series of plays and workshops for children. It runs a number of programmes in association with other organisations, such as the Chai and Why science-related talks held in partnership with the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and screenings of French cinema run in collaboration with Alliance Francaise de Bombay.
