Thar Blues is a soul-deep, intimate journey into the living heart of Rajasthan's desert culture, where music, craft, and storytelling come alive against the golden landscapes of Jaisalmer. Set across two immersive days in and around Jaisalmer, Thar Blues brings together the ancient traditions of Rajasthani folk music and the soulful spirit of blues in a way that is unlike any music festival in India. At the heart of the experience are the internationally acclaimed Barmer Boys, featuring Bhura Khan on rich, resonant lead vocals, Magada Khan on dholak, and 21-year-old Sawai Khan dazzling audiences with morchang, bhapang, khartal, and self-taught beatboxing. Their sunset performances at the shimmering Gadisar Lake are nothing short of magical. But Thar Blues goes far beyond performance. Visitors are invited to participate in morchang-making workshops, attend storytelling and music sessions at the home of the late Padma Shri Sakar Khan, explore Kamaicha workshops, and witness intimate Manganiyar baithaks with veteran musicians. One of the festival's most extraordinary offerings is the chance to meet Shankara Suthar, the last living Kamaicha maker in India, and connect with a craft tradition on the edge of memory. Between sessions, guests travel unhurriedly through the desert, share home-cooked Rajasthani meals, and participate in folk instrument sessions that invite genuine engagement with the culture rather than observation from a distance. Organised by Amarrass Records, a New Delhi-based label committed to fair trade and sustainable music production, Thar Blues is curated with deep respect for its artists, artisans, and the communities that carry these traditions forward. This is not a spectator experience. It is an invitation to slow down, feel deeply, and truly live the timeless charm of the Thar.

Artist Line-up Barmer Boys The internationally acclaimed Barmer Boys are among Rajasthan's foremost ambassadors of Manganiyar folk and Sufi music. Their performances seamlessly blend centuries-old musical traditions with contemporary energy, creating an experience that is both deeply rooted and vibrantly modern. Having performed across more than 25 countries at leading festivals including Roskilde, WOMAD and NH7 Weekender, the group continues to carry the living musical traditions of the Thar Desert to audiences around the world. Featuring: Bhura Khan – Lead Vocals Magada Khan – Dholak Sawai Khan – Morchang, Bhapang, Khartal & Beatboxing Instrument Makers & Cultural Custodians Mohanlal Lohar & Gigi Devi Among Rajasthan's most respected morchang makers, Mohanlal Lohar and Gigi Devi continue a rare family tradition of forging the instrument entirely by hand. Guests witness every stage of the process, from shaping molten iron into one of India's oldest folk instruments to understanding the craftsmanship and precision behind its unmistakable sound. Shankara Suthar Regarded as one of the last remaining master makers of the kamaicha, Shankara Suthar has dedicated his life to preserving the iconic bowed instrument of the Manganiyars. His workshop in Hamira offers a rare opportunity to witness the painstaking process of crafting the kamaicha—an instrument central to Rajasthan's musical heritage and now increasingly rare. Musical Legacy The Family of Padma Shri Sakar Khan Thar Blues concludes with an intimate baithak at the home of the late Padma Shri Sakar Khan, one of India's greatest kamaicha maestros. Continuing his extraordinary musical legacy, his sons Ghewar Khan, Firoze Khan, and Darra Khan, along with the younger generation of the family, welcome guests into their home for an evening of music, storytelling and conversation that reflects the living traditions of the Manganiyar community.

How To Get There

How to Reach Jaisalmer 1. By Air: Jaisalmer is not directly connected by air with any part of India. Jodhpur Airport, located about 300 km away from Jaisalmer, is the nearest airport to the desert land. The airport connects Rajasthan with all major Indian cities. From Jodhpur Airport, tourists can hire cabs to reach Jaisalmer. 2. By Rail: Jaisalmer is served by both broad gauge and metre gauge railway tracks. Jaisalmer can be reached through direct trains from Delhi, Jaipur and Jodhpur. The luxury train 'Palace on Wheels' is also available. Upon reaching the station, visitors can avail of auto rickshaws and private taxis to reach their destinations at nominal fares. 3. By Road: Jaisalmer has a well-maintained network of roadways.
