    The Ishara International Puppet Festival

    Started in 2001 by the Ishara Puppet Theatre Trust and produced by Teamwork Arts, the annual Ishara International Puppet Festival in New Delhi aims to “increase public awareness and appreciation of the various forms of puppetry from India and abroad”. During the same period as the main event, the Tagore Theatre Society in Chandigarh holds a parallel four-day festival featuring a selection of the productions staged in New Delhi.

    Over the years, the Ishara International Puppet Festival has mounted award-winning puppetry productions, conducted several educational workshops and brought to India works by over 160 international companies. These include those from Brazil, Sweden, Spain, Turkey and the UK. 

    From rod and string to mixed performances with dance, theatre and music, the festival a showcase of both traditional and modern kinds of the theatre art and among Asia’s largest puppet festivals.

    The 19th Ishara International Puppet Theatre Festival will take place between14 and 20 Feb 2023 at the India Habitat Centre in New Delhi & Tagore Theatre, Chandigarh. The acts at this year’s festival include Gulliver’s Travels by Puppet Shala Group, Jan Klaassen, Katrijn & the Crown of Kind William Alexander by Frans Hakkermars Poppentheater of Netherlands, Dragon and the Devil by Kamfor Babszonhaz of Hungary, Aisha’s Journey and Rumiyana by The Ishara Puppet Theatre, Puppet Fantasy by Theatre Sangsahwa of South Korea and Il Fil’Armonico by Teatro Tages of Italy.

    How To Get There

    How to Reach Delhi

    1. By Air: Located in the western corner of Delhi, Indira Gandhi International Airport connects various national as well as international destinations like flights from Bangalore to Delhi flight, Pune to Delhi, Chennai to Delhi, New York to Delhi, Dubai to Delhi and more.

    2. By Road: Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), the state-owned bus service provider operates the world’s largest fleet of eco-friendly CNG buses. Inter State Bus Terminus (ISBT) at Kashmiri Gate Sarai Kale-Khan Bus Terminus and Anand Vihar Bus Terminus are the three major bus stands in Delhi from where people can find buses for several routes. Government, as well as private transport service providers, have almost frequent bus service from and to the different part of the city. One can also hire a private taxi for further travel.

    3. By Rail: Delhi is the headquarter of Northern Railway and is regarded as one of the major railway junction on the rail map of India. Nizamuddin Railway Station, Anand Vihar Railway Terminal, New Delhi railway station and Sarai Rohilla are some of the major stations from where people can find several routes. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) provides metro services that connect several parts of Delhi to neighbouring destinations like Gurgaon, Noida, and Ghaziabad.

    How to Reach Chandigarh

    1. By Air: Located around 12 km away from the city centre, Chandigarh Airport links the city with the rest of the country by an extensive network of domestic flights. Regular flights from Bangalore, Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Srinagar and Ahmedabad are available for Chandigarh.

    2. By Road: Chandigarh has excellent road connectivity with other neighbouring cities. Many direct buses are available from cities like Mussoorie, Shimla, Mcleodganj, Dharamsala, Delhi, Kullu etc. The National Highway 1 connects Chandigarh with Delhi, which takes around four to five hours.

    3. By Rail: Located about 8 km away from the city centre, Chandigarh Railway Station has several frequent trains plying from New Delhi. From the railway station, you can take buses, autos or taxis to reach any place in the city.

    1. Light woollens, because both Delhi and Chandigarh are moderately cold in February, with temperatures ranging between 11-24°C.

    2. A sturdy water bottle, if the festival has refillable water stations.

    3. COVID packs: Sanitiser, extra masks and a copy of your vaccination certificate at the bare minimum are objects you should keep handy.
