    Wayanad Literature Festival

    The Wayanad Literature festival seeks to provide “the people of Wayanad and the adjoining areas with the extraordinary opportunity to enjoy a curated literature festival [while also offering] some of the best creative minds the opportunity to engage with the people of Wayanad.” The very first edition of the festival took place in December 2022.

    The three-day festival hosted over 100 writers, cultural artists and public intellectuals from all over the country as speakers and participants. Held in a village, the Wayanad Literature Festival hopes to offer a unique experience to participants and attendees alike. Some of the notable personalities who took part in the festival include Booker Prize winner Arundhati Roy, poet and Kerala Sahitya Academy President K Satchidanandan, novelist Paul Zacharia, critic and orator Sunil P Ilayidom, novelist Sheela Tomy and poet Joy Vazhayil. 

    The festival also included a three-day long film festival held in collaboration with the Kerala Chalachitra Academy, as well as a food festival run by Kudumbashree, a women’s self-help group in Kerala. It also included tribal band performances, heritage walks, campfire readings, poetry readings and musical performances.

    How to Reach Dwaraka

    By Air: Kozhikode International Airport at a distance of 120km is considered the best option to reach Mananthavady by air. Visitors can also book flights to Bangalore International Airport (at 290km) to reach this city.

    By Train: Vatakara Railway Station, which is around 65km from the city limits, is the nearest railway station to reach Mananthavady by train. From the station, visitors can board regular buses or hire private transport options to reach Mananthavady.

    By Road: Mananthavady is well-connected with most of the prominent places in Kerala, as well as nearby states. The city is located around 98km from Mysore (Karnataka), 80km from Thalassery, 92km from Kozhikode, and also lies at a close hand to Kodagu district in Karnataka.

    1. The weather in Dwaraka during December is dry and warm. Pack airy, cotton clothes.

    2. A sturdy water bottle, if the festival has refillable water stations, and if the venue allows bottles to be taken inside the festival site.

    3. Footwear: Sneakers (a perfect option if it’s not likely to rain) or boots (but make sure they are worn in).

    4. COVID packs: Hand sanitiser, extra masks and a copy of your vaccination certificate are things you should keep handy.

    Wayanad Literature Festival
    The Wayanad Literature Festival is organised by people who grew up in the hill district of Wayanad, which sits at the tri-junction of Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The organisation has journalist Dr. Vinod K. Jose as its director, and the festival is curated by journalist and author VH Nishad. WLF works in close collaboration with the Mananthavady Block Panchayat and the Edavaka Grama Panchayat. Over sixty community leaders work [towards] making WLF truly a participatory event [for] the local people. They include school teachers, farmers, small businessmen, auto rickshaw drivers, porters, and sound engineers.
