International Music Festival Lollapalooza Is Coming To Mumbai!

The Indian edition of the popular US fest will be staged in January 2023

International music fans in India already have something to look forward to next year. The long-running American festival Lollapalooza is coming to India! Scheduled for January 2023, it will be the most large-scale international music festival to take place in our country since the onset of the pandemic in March 2020.

Lollapalooza India will take place at an as-yet-undisclosed location in “the heart of Mumbai” on Saturday, 28 January and Sunday, 29 January 2023. Around 45 international and Indian acts will perform 20 hours of music across four stages to 60,000 attendees. Expect the line-up announcement in about a month. Here’s what else you need to know:

The history
Lollapalooza is one of the world’s most popular music festivals. Conceptualised by Perry Farrell, the frontman of alternative rock band Jane’s Addiction, as a touring event, Lollapalooza was first held in 1991 and subsequently staged across multiple states in the US and Canada for the next decade and a half. In 2005, Farrell partnered with American live experiences enterprise C3 Presents – the company behind such other fests as Austin City Limits in Texas and Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tennessee – to make it a destination festival in Chicago.

Since then, it has become an annual event in seven cities across three continents: Chicago, USA in North America; Santiago, Chile; São Paulo, Brazil; and Buenos Aires, Argentina in South America; and Berlin, Germany; Paris, France; and Stockholm, Sweden in Europe. Mumbai will be the eighth city to host the festival and the first one in Asia.

Although it started out as an alternative rock music festival and helped propel the careers of such now-iconic bands as Nine Inch Nails and Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lollapalooza has evolved into a multi-genre extravaganza that features pop, rock, metal, hip-hop and electronic music acts. The headliners for this year’s flagship edition in Chicago, for instance, are metal legends Metallica, pop superstar Dua Lipa, rap royal J. Cole and rock heroes Green Day.
